Chasing Close to Home

Well as the title of this post implies, we are chasing in eastern Colorado today, just as we did yesterday.  It's a weird meteorological setup which involves this phenomenon known as the Denver Cyclone.  It involves upslope flow and doesn't require quite the same level of atmospheric ingredients for severe weather that we are typically inclined towards.  Yesterday we didn't quite play aggressively enough and missed out on some big hailers and even a few tornadoes.  Even though our target city wasn't quite in the right sweet spot, the storms were nearly stationary for hours and we could have made a play.  Instead, we ended up at a Super dee Duper Motel 8 in Sterling, CO that smells like cow manure and has a lovely view of the penitentiary.  Today we are considering two plays, one North and one South.  The northern play is in the Nebraska panhandle (better moisture, not much instability and a pretty decent punch from a shortwave.  The southern play is southeast of Denver where all the CAPE is found.  It's one of those days where we just have to flip a coin and have no regrets about where we choose to target.  I was fortunate enough to have a long forecast discussion with Tim Marshall (an icon in the storm chasing world) this morning.  He's feeling the southern play...so we'll see!

Update on the new Scout 1 driver:  Marcus is awesome!  He's another TIV driver, in addition to being a surgical PA, owning a film company and clothing line, producing music videos, avid surfer...  It's unreal the people you meet while storm chasing.  I'm glad he is joining our team for the next couple of weeks!

One final note for this morning, I'm attaching some pictures from a beautiful hike we did on one our down days in El Dorado Springs State Park in Colorado.
